Jeff D. Owens, SHRM-CP, of Tulsa, Okla., is the 2017 recipient of the Susan R. Meisinger Fellowship


Jeff D. Owens, SHRM-CP, of Tulsa, Okla., is the 2017 recipient of the Susan R. Meisinger Fellowship for Graduate Study in HR. The award, which provides funding for first-time master's degree students in human resources, is named in honor of Meisinger, who served as SHRM's president and CEO from March 2002 until her retirement in July 2008.

Established in 2009, the fellowship was created to help develop the next generation of HR leaders. One winner is named annually to receive a fellowship of up to $10,000. Each fellowship is renewable for one additional year for a total of two years of graduate study and up to $20,000 total. The SHRM Foundation made the announcement Nov. 17 at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Volunteer Leaders' Summit in Washington, D.C. Owens is assistant director of HR for Tulsa Community College, which serves more than 2,500 employees. He manages records, benefits and performance management, and assists in developing policies and procedures while chairing and co-chairing various committees. He has been an HR professional since 1988 and has been active in SHRM at the local, state and national level. That has included serving on the board of the Western Arkansas Human Resource Association, as president of the Fort Smith (Arkansas) chapter, as a member of the SHRM Arkansas State Council and as director of the OKHR State Council. He was awarded the 2014 OKHR Excellence in Human Resources Management Award and was a Southwest Central Region Membership Advisory Council representative from 2015-16. Owens received his undergraduate degree in human resource development from the University of Arkansas and leads the SHRM Certification Study course as an adjunct professor at Tulsa Community College. He has been accepted into Oklahoma University's HR master's degree program.
